 A Talk for All Soul
November 1st, 2014

“What A Future?”

'Eternal rest, grant unto them ,O' Lord ,and let perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace .Amen. Today we remember and celebrate the lives of those who have gone before us-"that great cloud of witnesses who surround us" and support us with their prayers. This past week, I got a call from a priest classmate, that Fr. Jim Mennis, a classmate of ours got a massive heart attack and died. It got my attention. We do live in a culture that denies the reality of death – just take one indication –the efforts to stop anti-aging by selling pills-the advertising efforts are are everywhere.

Up until around 200 B.C. Jewish believers were of the mind that death was the end of everything, and that only God was immortal .Gradually there came the realization that human beings were blessed with an immortal spirit that survived death. And so in our first reading from the book of wisdom, which was written around 60 B.C. clearly says: "the souls of the just are in the hands of God, and no torment shall touch them. They seemed , in view of the foolish to be dead; and their passing away was thought an affliction and their going forth from us, utter destruction. But they are in peace . . .yet their hope full of immortality". Pope Benedict states : " that it has been a fundamental conviction of Christianity that love can extend to the afterlife, and reciprocal giving and receiving are possible".

The responsorial: "The lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want. In verdant pastures he gives me repose; beside restful waters he leads me, he refreshes my soul". Our second reading from Paul to the Romans 5: " But God proves his love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us . . .we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son". The gospel from John 6: "For this is the will of my father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I shall raise him on the last day">

Albert Einstein: " it has become appalingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity". Leonardo da Vinci: " It has long come to my attention that people of accomplishment rarely sit back and let things happen to them. They go out and happened to things". Amen.
